  • How does a solar hybrid mini-split air conditioner work?

A Solar Hybrid Mini Split is a ductless heating and cooling system designed to work with solar panels. Unlike traditional mini splits that only run on electricity, this "solar ready" system can harness free energy from the sun while keeping the option to use regular power when needed. It will even automatically manage where you're pulling power from to maximize your savings without any manual intervention.

  • Can other typical mini-splits be powered directly from solar?

No, our mini-splits are specifically designed to accept a direct solar input.

Typical mini-splits would need an expensive, standard solar system with additional components to utilize solar power.

  • How many solar panels will I need?

Typically 3-7 solar panels depending on the model of hybrid mini-split and the wattage of the panels used.

  • Will it operate without grid power?

With solar support, your system can keep running when the grid is strained or even during daylight power outages. By generating your own electricity, you become less dependent on utility companies and better protected against rising energy costs. This reliability is especially valuable in rural areas or regions where power interruptions are common.

  • Heat and Cool Spaces Outside Your Home That Don’t Have Power?

Solar mini splits are especially useful for spaces outside your main home that don’t have a power source. Think about a detached garage, shed, workshop, mancave, or she-shed—places where running electrical lines would normally be expensive or impractical. With solar panels powering the system, you can enjoy reliable heating and cooling in these off-

grid spaces without using any electricity. It’s a cost-effective way to turn unused structures into comfortable, year-round living or working areas.

  • What is a heat pump? Are these heat pumps?

A heat pump is an electrically powered HVAC device that provides both heating and cooling by moving heat, rather than creating it. It extracts heat from the outside air, ground, or water in winter to warm a home and reverses this process in summer to cool it, functioning like a reversible air conditioner.

Yes, our hybrid solar mini-splits are heat pumps. They both heat and cool.

  • Can these units be controlled remotely via Wifi?

Yes, utilizing the Wi-Fi Solar Air Con app allows remote operation controlling all features and modes with real-time energy monitoring. Setting up a schedule for operation can be achieved via the app as well.

  • Are solar hybrid mini-splits more expensive to purchase than typical mini-splits?

Solar-ready hybrid mini-splits are comparable in price to a lot of non-solar units on the market and in most cases more affordable than the "big name" units.

Of course the addition of solar to efficiently power the hybrid unit will increase the upfront cost of the complete system.

  • Do I have to buy the complete system all at once or can I just buy the mini-split?

Aren't ready for solar panels yet? That’s not a problem.  Solar Mini Splits can run on just power from the grid like other traditional mini split systems. Using its solar panel capabilities is optional.

Of course, we encourage the complete system to get maximum efficiency which = maximum savings on your power bill.

  • Are solar mini-split systems suitable for hot climates?

Yes. Solar mini-split systems perform particularly well in sunny and warm environments. Areas with strong sunlight benefit from solar energy generation during peak cooling demand. The system uses that solar power to operate efficiently while maintaining consistent indoor temperatures even during high outdoor heat.

  • Can solar mini-split systems be installed in older homes?

Yes. Solar mini-split systems are ideal for older homes because they do not require traditional ductwork. Indoor air handlers can be mounted on walls or ceilings while refrigerant lines connect to the outdoor unit, making installation practical for many existing residential structures.

  • How long does installation usually take?

Most solar mini-split installations can be completed within one to two days depending on the property layout and number of  units required. Installation includes mounting indoor air handlers, connecting refrigerant lines, installing solar components, and testing the system for safe and efficient operation.

  • Do solar mini-split systems reduce electricity bills?

Yes. Because solar panels provide a portion or all of the energy required to operate the cooling system, electricity consumption from the grid is significantly reduced. Over time, this helps homeowners lower energy expenses while maintaining reliable indoor comfort.

  • How often should a mini-split system be serviced?

Mini-split systems generally require maintenance at least once per year. Regular servicing includes cleaning filters, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical components, and ensuring airflow remains balanced. Routine maintenance helps prevent breakdowns and keeps cooling systems operating efficiently. In addition customers should monitor and clean the re-usable indoor filter as needed or call us and we'd be happy to help.
